CLINICAL PILATES: About 8 in 10 people have one or more bouts of low back pain. In most cases, it is not due to a serious disease or serious back problem, and the exact cause of the pain is not clear. This is called nonspecific lower back pain. The usual advice is to keep active, and do normal activities as much as possible.  In most cases, the pain disappears within six weeks but may come back (recur) from time to time. Chronic (persistent) pain develops in some cases and further treatment may then be needed. Clinical Pilates is taught by an STOTT ISP (injury-specialist populations) teacher or an APPI physio trained teacher. This class is suitable for both post and ante - natal mums .This class is limited in numbers to ensure individual attention. Please bring a Yoga mat and bottle of water to class, booking essential.

CORE PILATES/YOGA FLOW: This class is based on the latest research in fascial trains incorporating James de Silva's Garuda work which takes the class to the next level. Garuda combines  the strength work of pilates, the breathwork and asana practices of yoga and the grace of dance.

The benefits of Garuda include increased strength, flexibily, coordination and endurance with a greater sense of ease and wellbeing. Garuda  draws deeply on mental focus and teaching relaxation through movement. Like yoga garuda also massages the internal organs and aids in detoxification.

Garuda is a non stop flowing class that is challenging and mindful. You will leave feeling invigorated. It is suitable for anyone with some experience of yoga and or pilates. Watch a Garuda Class here. Please bring a Yoga mat and bottle of water to class, booking essential.

The Real Yoga of India
East vs. West

In Vedic Sanskrit, the literal meaning of the word yoga is "to add", "to join", "to unite", or "to attach" from the root yuj, In the west and In the modern world we have become quite successful in our external achievements--we have created powerful technologies and a variety of products, we are obsessed with accumulating power, wealth, property and objects--and yet we have not been able to create either individual or social peace, wisdom, or happiness. We have only to look around and see the destructiveness of our weapons, the emptiness of our pleasures and entertainments, the misuse of our material and personal resources, the disparities between rich and poor, and above all, the loneliness and violence of our modern world. We see that amid all our success in the external world, we have accomplished little of lasting value.

So is Yoga really just about the asana, stretching and meditating? Last week I visited Dharavi slums, Mumbai with www.realitytoursandtravel.com there were no Yoga studios or Asana practice there. Dharavi is the largest slum in the world and is a thriving recycle and business portal. They recycle everything from plastic bottles to paint cans, have bakeries, make clothes, bags, shoes etc. It is home to 1 million people, it has 10 thousand industries and 8 thousand owners living on site. Its turnover is 665 US Million dollars per annum; an average house size is 10 square meters in which 5 people live. There are 500- 600 toilet blocks for 1 million people, 1140 people use each toilet per day, and the water is only available for 4 hours every morning in which they have to fill all containers.

These people are proud, not one of them begged, their daily life and struggles is the "The Real Yoga of India". What we take for granted in the West is a mindful practice in the East. You just have to watch them play with their rice and Dahl before eating to savor every mouthful, appreciate and not waste a single drop of water. Our problems are simply first world problems and not in reality with third world problems. Food Banks, smoking, drinking and socializing are all privileges of the West, so we must not complain.

But what can a Yoga practice do for us in the West? A stable meditative posture helps us create a serene breath and calm mind. A good meditative posture should be comfortable and stable, ensuring that the head, neck, and trunk are erect and in a straight line. If the body is uncomfortable, it makes the mind agitated and distracted. The second kinds of postures are practiced to perfect the body, making it limber and free from disease. These postures stimulate specific muscles and nerves and have very beneficial effects. In our daily lives, meditation can be very helpful in eliminating many physical and psychological problems.
A significant amount of the disease we experience is actually either directly or indirectly the result of conflicts, repression, or emotional distress arising in the conscious or unconscious mind. Meditation helps us to become aware of these conflicts and to resolve them, establishing tranquility and peace. In this way, meditation becomes a powerful resource for facing the challenges of daily life.

Contact Dance Festival Arambol
Moving and Shaking in Goa

I was lucky enough to participate in Goa's Contact Dance festival. Seven days of moving in ways I've never moved before. Contact Improvisation is a dance form originally referred to as an "art-sport" in which the point of contact with another dancer provides the starting point for a movement exploration. It is about sharing weight, rolling, suspending, falling, passive and active, energy and awareness.

"Contact Improvisation is a dance form, originated by American choreographer Steve Paxton in 1972, based on the communication between two or more moving bodies that are in physical contact and their combined relationship to the physical laws that govern their motion-gravity, momentum, inertia. The body, in order to open to these sensations, must learn to release excess muscular tension and abandon a certain quality of willfulness to experience the natural flow of movement. Practice includes rolling, falling, being upside down. Following a physical point of contact, supporting and giving weight to a partner.
