"Hip movement & lower back pain"
Anyone who has been to my sessions before will know I'm very big on treating the cause and not the injury. We can go on for years treating the injury and never heal or continue having problems till we get down to the nitty gritty. The quality of our tissues will depend on the way we move, heal, respond etc Today i am addressing the relationship between the range of motion between the hips and how it can correspond with the lower back.

"The hip flexor region has an incredible effect on the body's structure, especially posture. For e.g the thigh muscles are the largest group of muscles in the body, they tend to do a lot of work without any conscious effort involved. From when we are babies with our legs in the air, to the time we crawl, to the time we walk, run or jump, the thigh muscles are continuously engaged as in the rest of the
body.

When the muscles of the upper thigh are dominate they tend to tilt the pelvis into anterior forward position. This in turn, tends to create a small arch in the lower back lengthening the lower abdominals and causing the hip flexors to become over excited and also stretch and accentuate the arch in the small of the back. Although the mid and upper abdominal may appear flat, they may not be working hard enough to counter the strength in the hip flexors that pull the spine forwards. The imbalance can cause considerable back pain." Read the full article here

The usual advice is to keep active, and do normal activities as much as possible. In most cases, the pain disappears within six weeks but may come back (recur) from time to time. Chronic (persistent) pain develops in some cases and further treatment may then be needed. Clinical Pilates is taught by an STOTT ISP (injury-specialist populations) teacher or an APPI Physio trained teacher. This class is suitable for both post and ante - natal mums .This class is limited in numbers to ensure individual attention. Please bring a Yoga mat and bottle of water to class, booking essential.
