"Sale Sharks try Clinical Reformer"

"Sale Sharks try Clinical Reformer"
Last week i took Sale Sharks for some cross training at our Clinical Reformer equipment classes. They were assisted by head of performance at Sale Sharks - Adam Grainger. "Within an intense professional rugby season, players bodies become battered and bruised! At Sale Sharks, Pilates is a tool which we have used to keep players fresh (mentally and physically), mobile and injury free between games. The postural stability our elite players can develop through a "low impact" training modality such as Pilates helps keep the players main stabilisers muscles healthy, therefore enabling them to use their main power generating muscles more efficiently in game situations.
The Reformer classes, challenge the players bodies in multiple movement plaines without adding any undue addition physical stress and create better movement awareness.  Pilates and the use of the Reformer will be of significant use for many individuals within our playing squad to ensure they are available for selection and able to compete in an optional state come game day!"Adam Grainger
Our Pilates Reformer equipment classes are an ideal compliment to Rugby union as they help the player focus both physically and mentally.
By addressing postural issues through Pilates, athletes can avoid many common injuries. Instability through the pelvis is a common cause of lower back pain. The cause is often postural; an anterior pelvic tilt (in plain English, a tendency to stick the bum out), which is often caused by tight hip flexors. This in turn shortens the lower back muscles and brings the hamstrings into a stretched position, leaving both vulnerable to injuries. Pilates is excellent for releasing the hip flexors, which will help bring the hips in to a more neutral position, and reduce strain through the back and hamstrings.

The Reformer is piece of exercise equipment specifically designed for Pilates and is a fundamental element of many Pilates programmes. It is designed to challenge the body in a variety of different ways, but in all of them, control is paramount. Reformer Pilates gives more feedback to the athlete than traditional weights, machine-based or mat workouts. This feedback helps build awareness of where the limbs are in relation to the rest of the body, and how to correct their position whilst moving. Pilates will also build awareness of which muscles are working and how to activate the 'correct' muscles to provide movement and stability. These motor patterns are fine-tuned through repetition over time, and are directly transferable to the gym, pitch, court course or track.

The body cannot generate powerful movements from a position of instability. Increased core stability is one of the key benefits of all Pilates programmes, enabling athletes to channel and maximise their power more effectively. The extra stability through the hips and core that Pilates develops can allow athletes to generate power from more unorthodox positions. A lot of exercises in Pilates are unilateral, generating strength and control in unstable positions even through an athlete's 'weak' side.

Rugby Union is a high impact collisional game, Pilates helps to focus the mind and breath and will take the player to work more on parasympathetic and yin qualities, which are essential for balance and equilibrium.  When we focus on the breathing the following benefits will happen:

Oxygenation Releases Tense Muscles When we breathe, effectively, oxygen flows into our blood which flows through our muscles.  More oxygen in the muscles equals more relaxed muscles.  The more, effectively, we breath in pilates the more we can release those tense muscles "trying to help out" in our exercises.
Heightens Concentration-In pilates there is a breath pattern with each individual exercise, and one of the major benefits of this is the concentration we gain.

Activation of Stabilizing Muscles - Exhaling deeply also encourages the activation of the deep abdominal muscles, which are essential in pilates.  Breath and muscular stabilization should occur before movement for safety and efficiency... for all of you type A uber-anxious people out there!

"The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning is complete co-ordination of body, mind and spirit".Joseph Pilates

"Five Lessons in four weeks"

Are you committed to get results? Can you take five lessons in the next four weeks ? If so i have the following places left on our Clinical Reformer equipment sessions starting this week.I started to do Pilates one month ago at the Pilates reformer studio in St Helens. I have been having one to one sessions once a week with Nisha Srivastava. I started to do the reformer Pilates as I heard good things about it and the many health benefits of doing the reformer Pilates. I've struggled the last year with a couple of injuries through sports and I was looking at trying the reformer Pilates as its an all over body workout without you isolating certain muscles. Basically by doing the reformer Pilates you get a all over body workout and depending how good you get you also get a bit of a cardio workout at the same time. Since I started doing the reformer Pilates one month ago I have noticed a few things , first of all my posture is better than it has ever been and I feel that I have grown as I am always standing straight and tall also I don't slouch anymore when standing or sitting I've found that without me thinking am always correcting myself to a better posture. I also feel that I have got more energy to deal with my busy schedule. I absolutely love doing the reformer Pilates and can feel the difference after only 5 sessions. Am looking forward to see how am feeling by 20 sessions because it's unbelievable how good it makes you feel as you can notice the benefits so soon after starting. Nisha is very highly trained and is top of her game. I would highly recommend Nisha to any one looking on improving there over all well being and physical benefits as the reformer Pilates can help you in so many ways.
